With special thanks to Margot Lévêque for her help with development
Monarch Nova provides a comprehensive update to the original ‘Monarch', first released back in 2017. The original cut was the first real attempt at a full digital font and thus inevitably suffered from the hallmarks of poor typographic judgement. However what it lacked in skill it by far made up for in character, combining a unique bodge of historical pastiche to create something thoroughly original in spirit.
To ensure a degree of longevity for the font, a fully redrawn update began in 2019 — Monarch Nova. This update sought to bring a sense of sophistication and subtlety to the face, toning down aspects of its character to create a more harmonious, balanced and legible revision. This was aided by the invaluable help of Margot Lévêque in the Spring of 2020 who assisted in its further development.
Monarch Nova is a Neohumanist, titling Roman, distinctly rich and antiquated in nature. Its architecture is innately Neoclassical in construction yet has the air of a more distant, bygone age. Its strokes are clean, sharp and unserifed, with wide open counters adding elegance and lightness of colour. Its forms are generous in width, aided by a tall x-height and short ascenders — its descenders gentle, tapered and crisp. Monarch Nova is equipped with text and titling figures, primary and discretionary ligatures, small caps, multiple stylistic sets and an extended range of pan-European Latin character set. Please check the 'PDF Specimen' below for a comprehensive overview of Monarch Nova's glyph set.
